What is this?

Messages is a text-based application that enables users to exchange written messages in real time over the internet. Like most messaging apps, Messages is primarily focused on communication via typed characters and emojis.

Some features of Messages include:

• Messages are transmitted and displayed to recipients almost immediately;
• Users receive notifications when the app is not focused;
• Users are identified by their name;
• Chats are grouped into threads, either between two users or in groups of three or more;
• Chat history is stored locally, with optional backup via peer-to-peer data storage;
• Users can see read receipts if enabled by other users;
• Users can see typing indicators if enabled by other users;
• Media attachments can be sent with messages; and
• All messages are peer-to-peer and encrypted, both in storage and transmission.
