What is Georgism?

Ideology

Georgism, also known as geoism and geonomics, is an economic philosophy holding that the economic value derived from land, including natural resources and natural opportunities, should belong equally to all residents of a community, but that people own the value that they create themselves.

Adherents believe government should be funded by a tax on land rather than taxes on practically everything else, such as labour or sales.

The Georgist paradigm offers solutions to social and ecological problems, relying on principles of land rights and collective finance which attempt to integrate economic efficiency with social justice.

Followers

Georgists support maximum cultural freedom and light restrictions on economic freedom. Some Georgists support the abolition of the state. Georgists oppose some private property rights.

Allies

Georgists will ally themselves with those nearby on the political spectrum, such as mutualists, liberals, libertarian capitalists, minarchists, and anarcho-capitalists.

Enemies

Georgists consider all authoritarians, whether they socialist or capitalist, to be their enemies.

Location on the political spectrum

Georgism is located at the far-bottom centre-right of the political spectrum. It is bordered by libertarian capitalism, minarchism, anarcho-capitalism, mutualism, and liberalism. As it is a fringe ideology, Georgism does not occupy as much space on the spectrum as more mainstream ideologies.
